SSRL Director Gaffney Discusses Strategy

Kelly Gaffney, who recently assumed directorship of SSRL, has published a message on SLAC News reflecting on past contributions and future strategy for SSRL. According to Gaffney, alignment of SSRL's strategy with SLAC's broader strategic plan is a key part of ensuring SSRL's relevancy. We applaud Kelly for taking on a challenge of this magnitude and believe his leadership abilities will help SSRL maintain relevancy alongside the rest of SLAC's facility roster in the coming years.

Zhirong Huang Is Co-Recipient of 2014 FEL Prize

Zhirong Huang and Bill Fawley (LBNL, ret.) will share the 2014 FEL Prize, announced last week at the 36th annual International Free-Electron Laser Conference (FEL 2014).

The prize is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of free-electron lasers. Congratulations to Zhirong and Bill for this achievement!

PULSE Investigators Martínez & Reed Secure Major NSF Grants

Todd Martínez, Ehrsam and Franklin Professor of Chemistry, recently secured a NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) grant which will enable his group to acquire a GPU cluster which will be used for development and application of computational methods which leverage GPUs instead of CPUs and thus the ability to tap into computing power several orders of magnitude greater than existing CPU-dependent algorithms.

Chemistry Graduate Student Liang Competes in ACS Culinary Competition

Winnie Liang, PULSE Chemistry graduate student, competed in a culinary competition at the 248th Meeting of the American Chemistry Society on 11 August along with Trevor McQueen (graduate student, SUNCAT). SLAC News discussed the competition in this article. Liang and McQueen were one of three finalist teams competing that day - congratulations for making it that far and thank you to both for representing PULSE and SUNCAT!
