High-speed X-ray diagnostics of Li-ion batteries

Program Description:
Li-ion batteries are critical to enabling long-life and long-range electric vehicles but are hindered by performance loss and safety issues. Synchrotron X-ray sources facilitate diagnostics of the multi-length and time-scale degradation and failure mechanisms of Li-ion batteries in real time, presenting opportunity for gaining unprecedented insight into spatio-temporal phenomena. This talk will cover the application of multi-modal X-ray techniques to understanding multi-length scale degradation and failure mechanisms of Li-ion batteries, from limitations during fast charging to the rapid structural degradation that occurs during thermal runaway.
