Multimodal in situ monitoring of halide perovskite synthesis

Program Description:
The field of halide perovskites moved towards more and more complex compositions enabling improved device performance and stability. Most of the improvements however, are chemical intuition driven or achieved through empirical optimization of processing conditions. In this regard, establishing the relationships between synthesis condition and film properties will enable active control of synthesis parameters and increase reproducibility. I will introduce a new multimodal in situ platform developed together with the Advanced Light Source (LBNL) that enables simultaneous optical as well as structural characterization already during spin coat deposition and film annealing. Using this approach, we identify how the Pb salt will influence the crystallization pathway and how it can template morphology. More importantly, correlating diffraction and photoluminescence (PL) measurements, we will show how in situ PL can reveal subtle changes throughout all synthesis steps including the onset of film decomposition.
