Program Description

In-space manufacturing of devices as and when the need arises is crucial for long duration space missions. Atmospheric pressure plasma processing is a powerful technique that could potentially be used for multiple applications in long duration space missions. We have developed an aerosol-assisted atmospheric plasma based process for fabrication of paper sensors and printing of electronic materials. Paper based disposable biosensors are a recent development in medical diagnostics and are also attractive for space missions owing to their light weight and ease of fabrication in-space on demand. In this presentation I will discuss plasma functionalization of cellulose and plastic biosensor chips, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based detection of molecular interaction and X ray absorption studies of surfaces, biointerfaces and biomolecules.
